Competition Team Opportunities

We invite serious twirlers to consider joining our award-winning competition teams! Sign-ups for our competition team are offered every May, and practices begin in August of each year. Twirlers learn their group routine from August - December and begin performing in January until June. The commitment lasts approximately 1 full calendar year. Twirlers and families that join this team must be dedicated. Families that join the competition team are expected to fulfill a full season commitment.

Requirements to join the competition team are as follows:
  • Twirler should be a current Twirling Star (Intermediate Level) twirler OR graduating to this class later in the year.
  • Twirler is expected to be registered and actively participate in a recreation class at the same time as Competition Team
  • Twirler and family must be willing to attend separate competition team practices weekly
  • Twirler and family must be able to attend all competitions in various locations that are local to us, but may also require some travel  (Oceanside/San Diego, Palm Desert & Las Vegas travel can be expected during the season)
  • Twirler must be able to attend competitions on pre-scheduled weekends (Most competitions held on Sundays)
  • Parents must be willing to purchase a new team costume every year they participate and all accessories needed to fit the theme of the routine.
  • Twirler must be able to attend EVERY competition team event required barring extreme circumstances that are cleared with the coach
  • Twirler must be dedicated to practice and work to memorize their part of the team routine and be a helpful, motivated and positive team member

Twirlers that sign up for competition team have the opportunity to perform in approximately 7-10 team competitions each year. Tryouts for the team are not required. We will work with all twirlers that are willing to dedicate themselves to the competition team. Twirlers will be placed on teams appropriate to their age and skill level as determined by Coach Cat.

Soloist Opportunities

Soloist opportunities are available to serious competition team-level twirlers. Twirlers that are soloists are dedicated to the sport of baton twirling and have ambitions of becoming a high school feature twirler and possibly going on to earn a college twirling position. A twirler can start solo twirling anytime during the season, however it will take approximately 2-3 months worth of lessons to prepare them to compete individually. We suggest beginning solo lessons in June so that you can start the season with us in October.

Requirements to become a soloist are as follows:
  • Twirler must be a current Twirling Star (Intermediate Level) twirler or higher
  • Twirler must be able to catch a Vertical and Horizontal 1 spin consistently
  • Parent must be able to commit to an additional solo practice time slot
  • Parent must be willing to pay for soloist lesson fees
  • Parent must be willing to purchase a solo costume for their twirler that meets our requirements
  • Parent must be willing to pay entry fees for each competition we attend
  • Twirler must be extremely dedicated to learning their solo routines and be willing to work hard at practice, remain focused, be respectful of Coach Cat and Melinda and be willing to practice on their own at home in order to personally improve

The benefits of becoming a soloist are great, but the commitment is serious. Before signing your twirler up for solo lessons, ensure that they are 100% committed to the sport and are willing to work hard and dedicate themselves in the way that this level of twirling requires.

Travel Team Opportunities

Baton twirling can take you places! Travel team opportunities are available to all of our soloist twirlers. The commitment to training becomes more intense. Twirlers participate in a weekly 3-hour workshop on weekend dates in order to prepare. They undergo conditioning by running or swimming, spin practice drills and working each of their routines to master each section.

Travel team members do not pay an additional registration fee, but there is a higher cost involved with traveling and the twirlers are expected to enter local and championship competitions throughout the season in order to prepare and get feedback.

Travel team members attend Twirl Mania International Championships (Walt Disney World, Orlando, FL) every other year. We also attend America's Youth on Parade National Championships (University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN) every other year. We try to alternate between Twirl Mania and AYOP trips. However, if there is demand to go to either one annually, we make adjustments to allow twirlers the opportunity to attend.

Sign ups for travel team are announced on BAND 6 months - 1 year in advance of the trip for planning purposes. We intend to travel to AYOP in 2023 and Twirl Mania in 2024.
